In my long vacation, I read two
books by Ruskin Bond; ‘Potpourri’ and ‘Notes from a Small Room’. Both these
books contain an assortment of short stories written by him. Since the theme of
both the books was similar, I decided to combine them and write about Bond’s short
stories in general.
True to its name, ‘Potpourri’ has
short stories that cover a diverse range of topics - comedy, romance, horror as
well as some memoirs. The other book is a collection of various articles that
the author has written for magazines, newspapers etc., over the course of many
years. Bond’s written style can be described as being simple but at the same
time, it has depth and can have a profound impact on the reader. Writing good
short stories involves leaving an impressing on the reader in the course of a few pages and Bond manages to do it
effectively in fictional tales.
Especially when reading his
memoirs, I found two things I could relate to- the love of books and an appreciation
of nature. His descriptions of the beauty around him, in the hills of Mussoorie
are truly eloquent. I was really amazed by his ability to convey the small joys
he experienced in life to the reader- his love of flowers, the birds around
him, the changing skies, of books. His deep sense of belonging with nature, a keen
observation of people around him and his complete honesty about himself leave
you in awe of this simple man.
I think it would be really hard
for anyone not to relate to his writings and not be touched by them. These
books made a perfect read for the lazy afternoons of my holidays. His work has
a soul soothing quality and can uplift any tired spirit! A highly recommended
read!
