The Great Gatsby

Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald
Genre: fiction, American classic

This book is regarded as an American classic and was written in the early half of the 20th century. In the story, Nick Caraway describes the events that led him to come to know a curious character of the name of Jay Gatsby.

Like most classics, what makes this one good, are its characters. There isn’t much in terms of the overall story. The one thing that stands out throughout the book about the characters is their shallow and artificial nature. Material things like money, glamour, cars and parties were what mattered most to them. However, loyalty and deep connections among people were greatly lacking. One sees that people were ready to befriend a person as long as they threw grand parties but turned their backs once the person was facing difficulties. Thus, through the story, the author has tried to show how the higher society of those times worked- on the outside, there was a lot of glamour but was hollow on the inside.

I found the writing style quite appealing and easy to follow. The descriptions throughout were quite poetic. However, I hoped that the characters were explored a little more. However, it was a good read overall.
