The Scarlet Letter

Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne
Genre: Fiction, American literature, classic

Scarlett letter is the second book by Hawthorne that I have read; the first being ‘The house of Seven Gables’. However, the latter is far better. I can understand now why it is considered as a masterpiece. There are so many factors that go on to make it beautiful. There is one particular thing that I like about his writing; something which was there in the first book and I was not disappointed in the second too- it is the eloquence of the language used. The complex sentence construction, the rich vocabulary; truly the zenith of English language.

But this is not the only thing that is remarkable. The study of human nature and an understanding of the times that has been displayed are outstanding. As one reads on, one can sympathize with every personage in this romance; their thoughts become your own and their emotions fill up your mind. It is particularly so in the case of the principle character. The doomed fate of the young woman draws your deepest sympathies. Her loneliness, her fortitude, her patience, have all been portrayed with intelligence and insight.

All in all, one of the best books I have read. Indeed, classics never do fail me!
